The value of a college education
Submitted by Dave on Tue, 2008-11-18 11:36. Homeschool | StupidityIt costs a lot to put your kid through college these days. Of course, you expect to get some value for your money, in the form of an educated young adult who can, you know, think and solve problems. Unfortunately, there is just no guarantee of that, as Rachel Lucas discovered recently:
Lab partner: “Well now we must make the solutions stronger to test higher concentration.”
Me: “We can’t make them stronger, they’re from stock solution.”
LP: “So we just add more!” » read more »

Already bored with A Beka
Submitted by Charla on Mon, 2008-09-08 21:42. HomeschoolWell, this hasn't taken long. I'm already bored with A Beka, but worse yet, so is my son. I had heard (after I started buying our books) that A Beka was known for its repetitive exercises, so that by the time the child has learned and practiced the lessons, s/he knows the material. Problem is, my son picks up new ideas so quickly that he's about to speed thru the books. » read more »

Government Socialization
Submitted by Wayne on Mon, 2008-09-01 07:41. HomeschoolThis is a 10-year-old's (fifth grade) take on socialization in government schools:
I don't like the fact that we don't get any social time. We [sic] only time we're allowed to socialize is at lunch, at recess (which we only get 15 minutes of), and in the Girl's Bathroom. A lot of the girls in my class go to the bathroom a lot just so they can socialize. I've done that once, and I din't really have to go to the bathroom.
How very sad.
SE Homeschool Expo
Submitted by Charla on Tue, 2008-07-15 08:23. HomeschoolAnyone going to the SE Homeschool Expo in Cobb, coming up July 25-26? I want to go but don't want to go alone. There's at least one seminar I want to attend and will go alone if I have to just to get to it. Now that hubby isn't doing his race on that Saturday, maybe we'll go as a family on that day. We'll see.
Have you been to this expo before? Any thoughts?
Aggregate-schoolers
Submitted by Wayne on Mon, 2008-07-14 13:42. HomeschoolI'd like to propose a new euphemism for public- and private-schoolers: aggregate-schoolers. While it should be immensely insulting to those who partake of such an inferior form of education, it's probably just subtle enough to escape such offense, especially among those generally less likely to perceive subtleties. » read more »
